5 Herbs That Help With Stress

With the new year now well and truly underway, it can be a little overwhelming returning to the daily grind. For many of us, stress can pop up and stop us from feeling our best. Luckily, there are several herbs that can help you combat stress and feel more in control for the year ahead!

As with any herbal remedy, it’s always best to see a naturopath who can work with you to create a formula specifically designated for you. However, here are my top five herbs to help combat stress!

1.Withania somnifera (Withania)

Withania promotes mental and physical wellbeing by improving the stress response via the adrenal glands. Withania exerts anti-stress and immunological functions restoring stress induced T cell function, along with neuroprotective effects. Withania activates the GABA receptor in the brain, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

2.Rehmannia glutinous (Rehmannia)

Rehmannia supports the pituitary gland and adrenal cortex by provoking the suppressive effect of glucocorticoids on the HPA axis.

3.Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice)

Licorice has been found to benefit individuals experiencing chronic stress. The active constituent glycyrrhetinic acid inhibits cortisol metabolism, reducing symptoms of stress.

4.Rhodiola rosacea (Rhodiola)

Rhodiola plays an adaptogenic role on the nervous system by assisting the body’s ability to cope with stressors. Studies show that Rhodiola increases mental performance, while decreasing cortisol levels, reducing stress and fatigue.

5.Avena sativa (Oats seed)

Classified as a nervine trophorestorative, oats seed promotes a rejuvenating and restorative effect on the nervous system by providing a sedative effect, reducing stress and easing tension.
