Managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Constipation
It is estimated that Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) effects one in five Australians, with over half that number being women. IBS can present with bloating,
Health begins in your gut.
Every day our digestive systems are overworked and saturated due to overeating, medications, fast foods, processed and genetically modified foods, toxins, alcohol consumption and stress.
These factors contribute to many Australians suffering from poor digestion sometimes without even knowing it.
Reduce the toxic burden and hydrate your body systemically for a greater feeling of wellbeing, increased energy levels and concentration. 80% of your serotonin (happy hormone) is produced in the Gut, clear the excess waste and watch your mood improve dramatically.
Get rid of that bloated belly once and for all. Encourage whole body detoxification to assist in balancing weight and get a clearer, brighter and more hydrated complexion.
Improve digestion and bowel regularity by supporting your gut, liver and immune function. Colonics help tone and reshape the Colon, its like a PT session for your Gut.
Colonic Hydrotherapy may assist with the following issues:
Here at the pH Clinic we believe Colonics are one of the most important treatment modalities for a multitude of health problems. Colon Hydrotherapy is also a fantastic health-promoting tool to expedite your cellular health and organ function.
Disease begins in the gut, if you neglect your Colon then expect uninvited pathogens, parasites and yeasts to wreak havoc and imbalance your intestinal flora. Your comfort and safety is our foremost priority so rest-assure your initial consult will cover off all your inquiries and we will walk you through the entire process.
We use a closed system medical grade Colonics device which we have imported from Germany. With a practitioner operating the device the entire time, your treatment is customised to your needs and comfort. The water pressure is incredibly gentle (0.5psi) but still very effective ensuring you get the most out of your session. All our disposable materials (tubing and speculums) are hospital grade TGA approved plastics – hygiene is something we take very seriously. You’re covered with a towel the entire time so your dignity is kept in tact and abdominal massage with natural oils is used to encourage the body’s natural elimination.
Hydrate
Hydrate the days prior for optimal results and refrain from eating at least two hours before your scheduled appointment. 2-3L per day of good quality water is a good guide.
Eat healthily (consult our Practitioners if you need assistance with this)
For best results, prepare a diet three days prior of fresh vegetables, soups, bone broths and avoid processed food, coffee, alcohol and refined sugar where possible.
Breathe and relax
Try not to arrive to your appointment stressed or anxious. The digestive system is directly linked to your nervous system so the less stressed you are the more effective your treatment will be.
Got gas?
If you are prone to bloating and flatulence, take some Activated Charcoal upon rising the day of your Colonic or a couple of days leading up to your treatment this will reduce the gas build up and draw toxicity out. We sell this product in the clinic if you so require.
Drink up
Drink plenty of filtered water, vegetable based juices, soups, bone broths and avoid processed food, coffee, alcohol and refined sugar where possible.
Eat
If your lifestyle allows you; eat pureed food for 24 hours after each session (blended soups, bone broths and cooked pureed apple with cinnamon are recommended).
Chew
Digestion starts in the mouth, make sure you are taking the time to chew and really enjoy your food, even if it is liquids.
Tune in
Listen to your body! When you return to eating normally ensure you are only fuelling your body with nutrient dense, digestible, fresh, whole foods. If your body has an adverse reaction to a food, chances are it didn’t want/need it at that time. Eat intuitively, not reactively/emotionally/impulsively.

There’s no such thing as a silly question, especially when your health is concerned. Here are some of our colonic hydrotherapy FAQs. For any other advice on love, life and colonics drop us a line.
Colon hydrotherapy is an effective method for cleansing the Colon of waste material and rehydrating your system. The procedure is very simple; the Colon is repeatedly flushed with warm filtered water at very low pressure which, when released, brings out with it any loose and impacted debris and toxic material. The water is introduced and released via a small sterile tube inserted into the rectum to a depth of two inches (5cm). The procedure itself lasts approximately 45 minutes.
The Colon is an extremely important organ in its own right. The Colon and its resident trillions of bacteria carry out a number of vital functions pertaining to the health of your whole body. These include the completion of the digestive process involving absorption of water-soluble nutrients, the synthesis of valuable nutrients such as vitamin K, short chain fatty acids and portions of the vitamin B complex, energy production and immunity provision.
The Colon is a major part of the excretory system, (which also includes the Kidneys, Liver, Lungs and the Skin) and is responsible for eliminating food and other bodily wastes. The healthy Colon provides an important role in protecting us from infection and disease. In a normal functioning Colon, this is achieved with the help of approximately one hundred trillion friendly bacteria, which inhabit the Colon and make up some 70% of the dry weight of our fecal waste. The Colon is principally controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system, a branch of the nervous system which controls resting, relaxing, rebuilding and digestive functions.
However, the delicate balance of this internal ecosystem can very easily be disturbed by a number of factors including stress, pollution, poor food and drink choices, certain medications, including antibiotics, smoking, exposure to toxic substances and food preservatives.
Very rarely there is more than a minor and transient discomfort experienced by some people. Your therapist will be able to put you at ease and answer any of your concerns. If you feel uncomfortable in any way, please tell your therapist. Occasionally the Colon may contract and give a colicky sensation but such episodes are usually brief and easily tolerated. These minor cramps are due to tissue in the Colon being dehydrated and or a sign that the body is releasing toxicity.
No, you will maintain your dignity at all times. You will be in a private room with your therapist who fully appreciates the sensitivity of the Colonic procedure and will help you feel relaxed and at ease. Your emotions and feelings will be acknowledged and honoured. After the gentle insertion of the speculum into the rectum, you are completely covered. The mess and odour that some people envisage, and sometimes present during an enema does not happen since the whole system is enclosed and any gas simply comes away as bubbles in the wastewater.
Historically, artefacts and records show that people have regularly purified their bodies, including cleansing the Colon. Originating in Egyptian times it was a form of detoxification used by Royalty to keep their vessel (body) pure from disease and infection. Around the turn of the 20th century, the present day Colonic equipment was developed. Up to the late 20’s many doctors had Colonic systems in their surgeries and similar equipment was found in hospitals too. Articles dealing with Colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930’s. Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in alternative therapies as a natural approach to health and Colonics has regained popularity.
No. A Colon therapist who is dedicated to your health, will encourage you to set a goal of having a well-functioning Colon. It may take a little while before your next bowel movement after a good Colonic. This is when people think they are becoming “dependent” on Colonics since it may take some time for faecal material to occupy the Colon once again. Dietary and lifestyle changes may be necessary to ensure long lasting and vital health.
Good bacteria can only breed in a balanced environment. It also stands to reason that valuable nutrients can better be absorbed in a clean environment than in a putrefied one. The important bowel bacteria are present on the Colon wall and the walls of our Colon can often be covered in mucoid-plaque and other waste which inhibits function, bacteria and overall health. We aim to remove this waste, thus leaving a large nucleus to grow bacteria naturally. If your bowel bacteria are out of balance, your therapist may recommend a probiotic implant and/or recommend a course of probiotics.
Every individual is different and a treatment can go anywhere from 30 – 45 minutes. Based upon the judgment of the therapist and your individual wishes your treatment times will vary. Additional time will be required before the Colonic for the therapist to go over your medical history as well as screen your physical presentation. At a first Colonic appointment you should expect to spend just over an hour at the Clinic.
We use drinking quality water meeting Sydney Water standards. The water is then further filtered through a 3 phase osmotic system before being warmed to the correct temperature 38 degrees celsius.
This will depend on many factors and will vary from one person to another. The Colon is 5 ½ – 6 feet in length so if you have a dehydrated gut or lots of compacted matter then it may take multiple treatments to restore its function. Others have a phenomenal release from one treatment, so everyone is different.
It will probably never be completely empty, as it is an organ in continuous use. The objective should not be an empty Colon, but rather a well functioning Colon.
The Colon is part of the body’s excretory system. The other excretory organs, i.e. the lungs, skin, and kidneys are important and work together and have different functions to eliminate toxins. For example, our lungs need clean fresh air and regular exercise to function properly. It is the job of our Colon to be able to excrete waste efficiently and absorb water and salts properly. Water is important for proper functioning of the Kidneys and to keep us hydrated and to cleanse blood, as well as being the major constituent of most cells. The liver, as an organ of detoxification is also closely linked to the bowel through veins. As the Colon gets relieved of toxic waste, other areas of the body begin to dump their stored toxins into the Colon to be excreted instead of stored. Its like a highway for toxicity out of the body, how many lanes do you have operating?
Everything has its proper place. People who take pharmaceuticals and find themselves constipated or find being away from home or on holiday can upset the natural rhythm of our bowel movements. Laxatives can be useful for relieving the symptoms of temporary constipation, but continual use of laxatives can further constipate by paralysing your bowel.
Enemas are useful for emptying the rectum/sigmoid, (the lowest 8-12 inches of the colon) usually 1-2 litres of water are used to do that. Suppositories are also used to accomplish the same task.
Colonic Hydrotherapy has the ability to release waste from all areas of the Colon. Robert Gray M.D. estimated one Colonic treatment is equivalent to thirty enemas.
Unfortunately not, as this therapy is not recognised by health insurance companies. Hopefully the health care system will come to realise its benefits as the demand for it increases.
