Think Your Gut Is Fine? This Colonic Perspective Might Change That

Blog post written by Colonics Practitioner Kelly Phoenix Rose

In a recent conversation about whether red wine is “better for you” than margaritas, I was genuinely shocked by the certainty and confidence a friend expressed when she said the only reason she was not at all interested in colonics was because… “it gets rid of the good stuff too.” Mind you, she has been struggling with ongoing poor immunity, digestive issues, and skin concerns for quite some time. I mean firstly, when we start “talking doctor” without actually understanding what that “stuff” is, good or bad, and only moments earlier having justified alcohol based on how it’s served… I think it’s safe to say we may need a perspective shift!

I want to share a personal reason why I get colonics—not from a scientific standpoint, but simply as a woman in her 40s.

Colonics help me remove the faeces, toxins, and gases that my body sometimes struggles to eliminate on its own. That “stuff” can feel pretty brutal on my body and my mood. And while I maintain a very conscious approach to eating – I also drink coffee, experience PMS, devour blocks of chocolate, unwind with a glass of wine from time to time, and use foundation and hair dye. Yet, there are no qualms applying highly flammable, carcinogenic substances to my head, just in case it might strip the “good oils” from my hair. The picture I’m trying to paint here is one of baseline social norms: toxic patterns that go unquestioned, completely accepted, even promoted within the human experience. Yet somehow, purified water introduced into the colon becomes the concern because it might take away the “good stuff.”

Here’s the perspective shift I want to plant.

In 2000, a study examined the umbilical cord blood of newborns in a Western city. The findings showed over 200 carcinogenic and flame-retardant chemicals present before the baby had even taken its first breath. Mind blowing! You can be as pure as holy water, but if you are living on this planet you have some cleaning and detoxing to do.

The idea that your GI tract is perfectly balanced with predominantly “good bacteria” would suggest you’ve never been exposed to sugar, glucose, petrol, skincare products, dairy, wine, tobacco, canola oil, margarine, mould, HPV… should I go on? Here’s the truth…your microbiome begins in the womb. The bacteria present in utero from as early as day 16 begin shaping your skin and nervous system. From there, the quality of breast milk, your environment, and the air you breathe throughout your developmental years all contribute to the foundation of your “good stuff.” So at what point can we acknowledge that most of us have been exposed to more “bad stuff” than good?

And that’s okay if you disagree, too.

Moving forward, I’ve lived a full life. I’ve experienced wild parties, travelled the world, and while I’ve eliminated many of the more obvious habits, even the small, occasional indulgences can impact my body’s ability to “keep up” with the load. That functional stress shows up as bloating, occasional constipation, skin flare-ups, and painful periods. For me, these are clear signals that my body could use support and extra help to clear the backlog and manage what continues to come in.

Colonics help me do exactly that.

They clear out what my body is not coping with. They support me from the bottom up. After many years working with detoxification, I continue to see the same pattern – we take natural medicine like pharmaceuticals. This is a toxic space to be in. A truly holistic, natural path is not just about a top-down approach, it’s about practice. Because knowledge, in the absence of practice, is poison. If you’re not actively engaging in the process of “letting go,” you limit yourself to staying stuck. Colonics tap into that letting-go system. They stimulate the body’s natural function of release using clean, filtered water. Now, I’ve never gargled water and damaged the enamel on my teeth.

Beyond their ability to help remove accumulated waste in the intestines, colonics also connect deeply with the nervous system. That relationship alone deserves its own conversation. Because probiotics alone won’t restore gut balance. Supporting the microbiome requires rewiring the entire “letting go” system – physically, emotionally and neurologically. And that requires a level of openness.

Because being stuck in any belief system will eventually show up in the gut. Arriving at your health concerns with a sacred “yes” allows you to truly feel into whether something is helping you or not.

A perspective shift… to shift the perspective.
