How do Essential Oils work? Easy hints and tips for beginners.

Essential Oils 101: Tips for Usage and Their Amazing Benefits

I just love essential oils! As a kid you could find me making potions in the back garden from flowers and dirt and anything I could find. Since becoming a mum I have found that essential oils have helped me when I am ill, and have assisted in generating a calming, grounded and healthy atmosphere in my home. At the clinic we use essential oils to help to create a beautiful and inviting environment that clients enjoy immensely.

So this has inspired me to share with you some easy hints and tips on using essential oils in your home and with your family. In the clinic we use Doterra oils as we find them to be of extremely high quality and created from the purest of sources. The main thing to remember is to always select oils that are 100% pure – nothing synthetic! For the best essential oil experience, it is important to use oils that are pure, potent, and safe.

What is an essential oil?

Essential oils are pure, concentrated liquids extracted from flowers, herbs and plants. They are cherished for their fragrance and above all their therapeutic value.

How to get started with essential oils?

When getting started with essential oils it is best to think about the following things. There are 3 keys ways to use essential oils;

1. Through smell. This is called “aromatic” use of essential oils. This includes any application method that helps you experience the aroma of the oil. You can use essential oils aromatically by:

  • Diffusing in an essential oil diffuser
  • Applying a drop to your hands and inhaling
  • Wearing as a personal fragrance

2. On your skin. “Topical” application of essential oils allows the oil to absorb into the skin. Some ways to use essential oils on your skin are:

  • Massage
  • Apply to targeted areas and rub in
  • Add to lotions or moisturizers

3. Ingesting, or “internal” use of essential oils allows the oil to be    transported throughout your body. Make sure the essential oil is safe for internal use first, and then try one of these methods:

  • Add to a glass of water
  • Take in a veggie capsule
  • Put a drop under your tongue

What are the best essential oils?

As you try different oils, you will learn which essential oils work best for you and your needs. We have a variety of testers in the clinic you can sample to get a sense of what resonates best for you. Some popular and favourite oil choices from our team and clients alike are as follows:

  • Lavender – Calming, relaxing and regenerative
  • Lemon – Uplifting, energizing and stimulating
  • Eucalyptus – Clearing, enlivening and fresh
  • Purify Blend – Refreshing, herbal and clean
  • Lemon Eucalyptus (Australian Native) – Invigorating, fresh and revitalising
  • Frankincense – Master healer, restorative and grounding
  • Black Spruce (or any Pine or Native Fir) – Grounding, relaxing and cleansing
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca) – Antiseptic, decongestant and cleansing
  • Geranium – Strengthening, releasing and stabilising
  • Ylang Ylang – Calming, floral and soothing

Safety Guidelines

Some safety guidelines to remember when trying essential oils:

  • Avoid applying oils to sensitive areas like the nose, ears, eyes, or broken skin. Avoid using “hot oils” on the face.*
  • Always read labels and package instructions before using an essential oil for the first time.
  • Use dilution to minimize skin sensitivity.
  • Be aware of oils with sun sensitivity warnings.
  • Practice safe storage—keep oils out of reach of children.
  • Always supervise young children when applying essential oils.
  • If you have specific health concerns, talk to a healthcare professional before trying essential oils.
  • *Hot oils or strong oils include Cassia oil, Cinnamon Bark oil, Clove oil, Oregano oil, Thyme oil, and others.

Enhancing Your Home and Well-Being with Essential Oils

Most of our clients enjoy using essential oils in a diffuser or as a wearable fragrance. Oils can also be added to the bath or shower for added benefits such as relaxation, focus, sleep and even energising. Our sense of smell is a tool that can elicit powerful physiological, mental, and emotional responses. Essential oils are quickly absorbed by smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system, which is the part of your brain that stores memories and emotions. Most remarkably, essential oils have both a calming and uplifting effect on the central nervous system.
