When Resistance Speaks: Listening to the Body’s Wisdom

The two weeks I spent in Bali recently were easily in the top five of my most profound life experiences. There’s so much for me to unpack and it will take me a little while to do so. I’ll share some of the key moments when I’ve had that chance.

The two weeks were incredibly full on and culminated in a final breathwork circle on our last day. What happened to me in that moment was interesting. My body completely refused to jump into my breath practice. I’d seen this in others (most interestingly often in those most physically fit) and now I was experiencing it in my own body.

It was done. It had had enough. No matter how much my mind said I could power through, my body held the truth that I was exhausted.

We’re often taught to push through resistance, overcome fatigue, and silence our hesitation in pursuit of our goals or pushing through. But what if these feelings aren’t obstacles to overcome, but messengers delivering important information about our lives?

Resistance can be a quiet protest from within. It may arise when something feels misaligned with our values or when we’re being asked to move too fast without clarity. Rather than pushing through it blindly, pausing to explore the source of resistance can reveal unmet needs, unspoken concerns, or even a better path forward.

Fatigue, too, is more than just tiredness. It can be a sign that we’re overextending ourselves, not just physically but emotionally or mentally. Hesitation too might be protecting us from commitments that look good on paper but feel wrong in our bones.

Instead of attempting to push through these feelings you could ask:-

⭐ What is this resistance protecting me from?

⭐ What does this fatigue reveal about how I’m spending my energy?

⭐ What truth might my hesitation be pointing toward?

By reframing these experiences as signals rather than setbacks, we create space for self-awareness, empathy, and more thoughtful decision-making. In doing so, we may begin to recognise signs of deeper misalignment—such as unfulfilling relationships, careers that drain rather than energise us, or goals that reflect someone else’s vision for our lives.

In my case, it was pure exhaustion

Listen carefully. Your resistance might just be your wisest advisor.
