How Kinesiology Helped Me Diffuse Stress

Western medicine is too often our ‘go-to’ or start point when we have a physical ailment. And too often it’s also our end point – as we treat our symptoms with drugs. We visit the doctor, pop to the pharmacy and use Google to seek advice from the world of conventional or mainstream medicine. This path typically leads to a pill, lotion or potion….

In taking this approach we can fix the immediate problem but miss an opportunity to dive deeper to really understand what’s really going on. What’s behind the physical symptoms? Is there something deeper at play?

This is where kinesiology comes in. Kinesiology looks at the body and mind as a whole, taking into account physical, mental, emotional, energetic and spiritual aspects.

Natalia Stanley, our pH Clinic Kinesiologist, is a nurturing and talented practitioner. Here one of Natalia’s clients shares her experience:

Why kinesiology?

Before my first session you could say kinesiology was largely a mystery to me, I really didn’t know what to expect. However, being a strong believer that what’s going on in our minds and guts can manifest externally I’m always open to alternative therapies. Therapies that look beyond immediate physical symptoms.

What prompted me to have a kinesiology consultation? A niggling skin irritation on my face and sporadic periods were my main drivers, coupled with more than a little curiosity. Also I guess you could say I’m always looking for new ways to promote my day to day happiness and wellbeing – so I was keen to understand what role kinesiology could play.

My first kinesiology session

My first consultation with Natalia was just over 90 minutes. Although that may sound like long the time flew by. I felt like we could’ve kept going and the insightful discussion and my learnings would’ve got even richer.

Throughout the session Natalia asked me lots of questions about my lifestyle, nutrition, behaviour patterns, thoughts, feelings, relationships and family history. She quickly gathered a deep understanding not only about what’s going on in my world right now but also my past and what motivates me. We talked a lot about balance – or Yin and Yang. I felt super comfortable throughout and totally open to sharing – Natalia created a trusted and non-judgemental environment that really relaxed me from the outset.

How my thinking shifted

I went into my kinesiology session feeling pretty good about life. I tell myself I have nothing to be stressed about……I live in Manly by the beach, work freelance on my own terms, am on the property ladder, happily married, don’t have the responsibility of kids…..oh and I eat a super healthy plant based diet and exercise most days.

However kinesiology really prompted me to realise that something more is at play behind my physical skin and menstrual symptoms. This something more is what I’m calling ‘self-inflicted stressors’ – they’ve been around for as long as I can remember and they’re within my own mind. They’re rooted around my need to fill every waking minute with a sense of accomplishment and control.

And clearly those stressors are now causing inflammation in my body. Inflammation that’s surfacing in a couple of lingering physical symptoms.

My kinesiology take-away

The whole kinesiology experience was so surprising for me – the in-depth nature of the session allows for a rich discussion that empowers you with knowledge and self-awareness. I learnt that what I felt were strong personal values around achievement and purpose, combined with a constant need to plan and be in control, has thrown me out of balance. Too much yang and too little yin, for too long, has depleted my energy stores and the resulting imbalance is now crystal clear to me.

I’m now confident that, whatever your problem or issues, kinesiology can provide you with the knowledge and self-awareness that will inspire you to change, take action and heal. After three or four sessions and in just a matter of weeks you’ll walk away with practical measures you can take to set you on a path to restoring balance and harmony in your life.

If you’ve got a mind or body issue (or both) but haven’t got to the bottom of what’s going on then I’d certainly encourage you to open yourself up to kinesiology. Post my experience I truly appreciate the value that can come from a therapy that combines ancient wisdom from eastern traditions with modern knowledge from western science.
